Zimtsterne Cookies: Recipe for Week 1 of Our 2024 Christmas Cookie Cook Along

Zimtsterne cookies are like little bites of Christmas magic! Recipe by Greg Weekley, these traditional German treats, whose name means "cinnamon stars," are as enchanting as they sound. Picture this: a crisp, spiced cookie bursting with cinnamon and almond goodness, topped with a glossy, snowy blanket of sweet meringue icing. They sparkle on your holiday cookie tray like tiny stars plucked straight from the heavens.

Ingredients for Zimtsterne Cookies

  • 7 oz finely ground almonds or hazelnuts

  • 4 oz all-purposed flour, sifted

  • 5 1/2 oz powdered sugar

  • 5 1/2 oz unsalted butter, cold, cut into cubes

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon, sifted

  • 1 tablespoon dark rum

1 egg, slightly beaten


Instructions

  • Sift flour, ground almonds/hazelnuts, cinnamon and baking powder together

  • Add sugar, egg, rum and cubed butter

  • Mix very quickly into smooth dough

  • Place into a bowl, cover with cling wrap and refrigerate overnight

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease baking sheet

  • Rollout on a floured board and cut into star shapes

  • Place on greased baking sheet

  • Bake 7 minutes

  • Remove and cool on wire rack

  • Brush the stars when cool with rum glaze


Rum Glaze

  • 7 oz icing sugar, sifted

  •  1 tablespoon rum

  • 2 tablespoons hot water

  • Mix ingredients into a thick, smooth paste and apply with a brush or knife
